Governance Matters: Ensuring Inspection Success in Independent Schools in England, The Education Partnership

June 17 2026

Our key conclusion is that school culture, and clear lines of accountability, are the strongest predictors of regulatory compliance and successful inspections. We note that governance has a two-pronged significance in inspection: it is inspected in its own right, but as a practice it also helps to determine positive inspection results in all other areas of school operations. We also recommend that the current arrangement, whereby Ofsted and ISI are partners in independent school inspection, be strengthened and made more equal.  If you have comments or questions relating to this research, please do get in touch:  Bill Brown, Chairman info@edpa.org.uk, https://www.theeducationpartnership.org.uk/
