SEC - The Way Forward
The 2011/12 winter has seen the Society of Education Consultants embrace some of the most important changes since the Society was formed as we prepare to forge a path ahead in a fast-changing education landscape.
Our AGM on 25th November passed a resolution to change the status of the Society from an Association to a Company limited by guarantee (Society of Education Consultants Limited) as from 1st January 2012, and to transfer all the assets of the Society to the Company at that date. The AGM also elected officers and a Board who on 1st January 2012 became the first directors of the Company. We were fortunate that four more people offered to join the Board and so will be able to contribute their knowledge, experience and skills to the collective good of the Society and all its members. Also from 1st January, the Articles of Association of the company replaced the Society’s constitution.
The objectives of the company remain identical to those of the Society, but the formation of the limited company makes it significantly easier for the SEC to enter into agreements with other potential partners as we develop our services in the months ahead. Membership subscription rates have been held unchanged for 2012. Please note the Society no longer offers Associate Membership: any remaining Associate members are being offered Individual membership. The change to company status also means that membership subscription now means subscribing as a member of the company. In practice, the only difference is that members will have a residual limited liability of £1 (one pound) should the company fail. That amount cannot be changed so there will not be any unwelcome surprises in the future.
Alongside these changes, significant work has been taking place to revise our Code of Practice – an important document which underpins the SEC’s reputation. The latest draft version can be read here. Other important developments currently underway include work in the area of Quality Assurance and the development of a range of SEC-backed training courses. More information on these developments soon.
Finally, we have drafted a Standing Orders document. If you would like to comment on this, please contact SEC Board Member Richard Beeden.
